about

Udmurt folktronica from Izhkar (Izhevsk), Udmurtia.
Formed in 2018, Post-Dukes combine traditional Udmurt songs, instruments, and styles with contemporary electronic sounds.
This debut album "Udmurt Rave" was released digitally in 2020, issued here for the first time on vinyl including English-language translations and original artwork.

Udmurts are a distinctive ethnic group indigenous to regions in Central Russia near the western edge of the Ural Mountains—a chain of ridges forming the natural border between Europe and Asia. Known for their vibrant folk traditions and unbroken nature-based spirituality, the name "Udmurt" means "meadow people" in their language. They are also regarded as some of the most red-haired people in the world, a trait many embrace with pride.

Post-Dukes sing in their native Southern Udmurt dialect: a language related to Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian, Komi, and the indigenous languages of Western Siberia, among others in the Uralic language tree. Udmurt is spoken by approximately 270,000 people today. However, like many indigenous languages it is in a steep decline and cannot survive among future generations without ample support and revitalization.

But there is hope! Post-Dukes are among the vanguard of an Udmurt renaissance in younger generations: seeking to preserve their language and culture while embracing contemporary technology and social progress. Such artists strive to create new forms with the palettes passed down by their ancestors—and to magnificent effect. Kota Tones is proud to partner with post-dukes in sharing "Udmurt Rave" with the world!
